What it needs: capabilities to
. Deeply understand a subject (find the core issue among noise, find relevance from seemingly unrelated topics, divide and conquer a big problem)
. Think logically
. Apply frameworks based on scenarios
. Clearly think and express opinions.

How to practice:
. Keep an open mind - do not draw conclusion too early (change perspectives, break down big problems, etc)
. Identify what’s aligned and not - are you talking about the same thing (what reality is vs what a vision is)
. Pick data, evidence, stories to support opinion and demonstrate relevance and diversity in data

A slippery slope argument, in logic, critical thinking, political rhetoric, and caselaw, is an argument in which a party asserts that a relatively small first step leads to a chain of related events culminating in some significant effect. Definition is from Wikipedia.

This can also be used to point out direct or indirect reasons why people support an event, and question them. Remember to check if they have put certain constraints around those reasons, if they have mixed the core differences between events, or if they take certain stands on principles, or moral standards.

When people face a situation where they are thinking about solution options, they could notice that this solution falls into this four quadrants.
. It works and it’s morally right to do — everyone wants to go ahead and do it
. It does NOT work and it’s NOT morally right to do — nobody wants to do it
. It does NOT work but it’s morally right to do — usually nobody wants to go with this route
. It works but it does NOT seem to be morally right to do — it depends on how much it pushes the boundaries

When you evaluate whether a solution works or not, you need to look at data, facts, track records and whether you need to constrain it within certain scenarios.

When you evaluate whether a solution is morally right or not, think about whether it violates any rules in terms of justice, culture, civilization.

If it falls into the quadrant of “It works but it does NOT seem to be morally right to do”, maybe we should think about why, in the first place, that we are put in this place of having to make the choice of picking a solution in this quadrant.

If people are talking about what’s existing, they are describing what has happened, they may give data, they talk about facts.

If people are talking about the vision, they are talking about what should be, what’s worth pursuing, what’s good or right.

It’s important to be able to tell when people are talking about what’s existing (to be) and what’s the vision (ought to be), especially during a discussion or a debate — you need to be on the same page before diving deeper into the discussion.

It’s also important to think carefully about the data presented — when they say “we’ve always done it this way”, remember to question it: we’ve always done it this way, but is it the right way?

Correlation and causal relationship (Continued Sketchnotes on learnings of critical thinking and debate)

If A and B usually happens around the same time, then A and B may be relevant, but it does not mean A causes B, although you may use A to predict B.

You can only change B by altering A in the event that A is the cause for B. If A is not the cause for B, but for some reason you think otherwise — instinct, bias, etc — it may lead to a wrong way, and could result in delaying the right strategy and solutions.

A and B happen around the same time but does it mean A causes B?
. Check if B causes A
. Check if there’s a separate C that’s causes both A and B
. Check if it’s a coincidence — are A and B relevant at all?

Also remember: do not blindly believe data.

During my pregnancy, I often thought about the type of relationship I wanted to have with my upcoming child. Then I came across “On Children”, a poem by Kahlil Gibran. I thought this poem depicts exactly what I want it to be, and I felt the urge to make it into sketchnotes, so that I can revisit it every once in a while.

I recently finished the book Hyperfocus by @chrisbaileyauth and made this sketchnotes. I liked that Chris called out the importance of being creative with scatterfocus, because that’s how I come up with some great ideas with my mind wandering as I take a walk. Overall I enjoyed the book a lot and think people who are looking to become more productive and creative will benefit from reading it. I don’t think this is published in Chinese, so I took a stab and translated the content into Chinese so that I can share with my friends and family.

Sketchnotes for Atomic Habits, by @jamesclear, a book I enjoyed and finished recently. I used this framework to reflect my journey of writing — why initially I was not able to stick to a daily writing initiative, later with a simple change, by drawing a simple picture first, I was able to write daily for a year and a half, not missing a day.

The secret is the fourth law (reward): make it satisfying. When I initially tried to write daily, I wrote for two days and gave up. I moved forward blaming myself why I can’t be more disciplined to write, but deeply inside, I knew pushing myself hard to write would not make me happy.

One day, a few life incidents happened. I jogged them on paper and suddenly an idea struck me — why not draw first then write? I’ve always loved drawing, and enjoyed flipping through a sketchbook. Seeing my sketchbook fills up with pictures would make me really happy, and I can use that to stay motivated to write.

Then boooom. I wrote the next a year and a half, not missing a day.

It’s so important to build habits by finding your true motives, so that you can truly enjoy that process.

One of my favorite parts from the book Creative Confidence is “reframe a problem”. When I first read it, when I was a few years into my UX designer career, and it gave me such an aha moment. Coming from a computer science discipline, I tended to solve problems as soon as I noticed them. A lot of times I didn’t even solve the right problems. I was only focused to “get it solved”. Over time, I finally got used to calm down and think thoroughly what the right problems to solve before I take actions.

Today is Qi Xi Festival, the Chinese Valentine’s Day. I made this illustration of traditional Chinese festivals and this festival is the pink one on the right side.

From Wikipedia: It celebrates the annual meeting of the cowherd and weaver girl in mythology. It falls on the 7th day of the 7th lunisolar month on the Chinese calendar.

The general tale is a love story between Zhinü (the weaver girl, symbolizing Vega) and Niulang (the cowherd, symbolizing Altair). Their love was not allowed, thus they were banished to opposite sides of the Silver River (symbolizing the Milky Way). Once a year, on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, a flock of magpies would form a bridge to reunite the lovers for one day. There are many variations of the story.

Slow is smooth. Smooth is fast.

The first time I heard about this was when I started learning karate. You may have seen martial arts movies and impressed by all the speed and fancy moves. If you try to imitate those moves and their speed - a lot of them probably were made up - you are not going to get them correctly.
Start with “slow”, learn the moves, learn them correctly, practice thousands of times to turn them into muscle memories.
Then, you get into the smooth state, then the fast state.
