Recently, I found that my baby likes to play with the object permanence box I made for her by picking at it with her hands. So I decided to make her a smaller box that is easier to grab with her hands. I made a cube out of thick cardboard with cut-out shapes on each side. This way, her little hands can grip onto it, and the different shapes allow her to feel straight lines and curves. She can also throw the box around because it is lightweight.

Materials: Cardboard box, plastic container lid, pen, hot glue gun, scissors, and a utility knife.

I couldn’t stop pressing it myself, and I was hoping my baby would have fun playing with it just like that. But then I realized that my baby didn’t quite get the whole “pressing” action yet. Instead, she invented her own way to play, happily pulling and tugging at the button. Good thing I used rubber bands when I put it together, so the button is nice and flexible!

I collaborated with ChatGPT 3.5 to create a simple, stress-relieving game. It played the role of a front end engineer, generating 99% of the code. I, on the other hand, took on various roles such as design, debugging, testing, and deployment. I communicated game requirements to it using natural language, and it executed them. Our collaboration was satisfying and efficient. It took me about three days to develop this game, mainly working on it during my baby's nap times or when I had some alone time. The key to the success of this teamwork is the human role — define requirements, clearly express them, and proactively identify issues.

As for how ChatGPT’s programming capabilities can assist user experience designer, creating interactive design prototypes would be one example. ChatGPT 3.5’s rapid programming speed and low trial-and-error costs make super fast iterations possible. While developing this small game, I didn’t create any sketches beforehand; instead, I designed and optimized on-the-fly. If I were programming by myself or collaborating with other engineers, I’d need to draw sketches first. I have seen in online stores that parents love to buy spinning drums for their babies. The problem with these drums is that they often have limited functionality and can only be played with one hand. To make it more fun for my baby, I decided to make my own version. I used some sturdy boxes to make the drum and cut out some Disney characters from a Huggies diaper box. After cutting out the characters, I glued them to the surfaces and the drum looks adorable!

Although my baby is too young to fully grasp the concept, she seems to be learning with each attempt. She will have more fun as she develops better hand coordination.

Since having a baby, our lives have changed significantly. It can be quite chaotic at times, but I have always felt confident that we can weather the storm.

It's a wonderful feeling.

I think it's because of the way we treat each other. We have a deep appreciation and respect for one another, and we always manage to see the best in each other.

In the book "Playful Parenting," the author talks about how every one has innate "Love Cup” that needs to be continuously filled with love and care. When life gets tough and we're feeling anxious or overwhelmed, our energy is drained and cups can run dry. That’s why we need to find ways to replenish it. When my own cup is full, I can better fill up the cups of those around me.

What makes me happy are the little things here and there in my life. They build up over time and constantly fill up my cup, giving me the confidence to face whatever comes our way. I can't help but capture some of these moments with quick drawings.

The Lantern Festival is coming up! It’s the 15th day in the lunar new year. On this day, my family usually eats rice balls that have various fillings — my favorite is black sesame. When I was young, we went to the top of the ancient wall around the city center in Xi’An, where people could take a walk, enjoy beautiful lanterns, and play word puzzles. I haven’t had a chance to go back and celebrate it with my family since I came overseas, but I hope to do that in upcoming years.
